The Tyranny of Masks

There is a petition being circulated among Vermont citizens who care about their freedom and their bodily autonomy; over 3,400 citizens have signed it so far. Perhaps you agree with these folks, perhaps you're not certain and wear a mask "just in case" because it seems like such a trivial thing to do.
Except, it isn't trivial.
Although some of us may have to don a mask for a few minutes to run into a store or mail a letter, the cashier at the grocery store and the clerk at the post office have to wear a mask for their entire shift.
Did you know that, according to a current lawsuit in Ohio, dentists are seeing a new phenomenon called mask mouth? It is a dental disease caused by the build up of bacteria inside the warm moist environment of the face mask.
Some Vermonters who are forced to wear a mask for extended periods at work report headaches, lightheadedness, anxiety, and sores appearing around the mouth, among the most common physical consequences.
Some will say, "Well, there are exemptions if you can't wear a mask, so no big deal!"
Except it is a big deal.
Employers threaten to fire employees who can't wear a mask.
Business owners refuse to provide service to anyone who can't wear a mask, regardless of whether a medical exemption is claimed.
Even a certain "pick your own" apple orchard in Shelburne won't permit apple picking for those who cannot wear a mask and their customers are outdoors separated by way more than a few feet.
Even if you do get into a grocery store or other shop without a mask, it is quite likely that you will be glared at, whispered about, or even openly harassed by other shoppers.
Now consider the children of Vermont.
It has been widely reported from multiple respected sources that children rarely get the virus, and when they do, it is very rarely anything more than a short and mild illness.
There has not been a single documented case worldwide of a student infecting a teacher.
Yet, here we are, with not a single scientific study regarding the hazards of long term mask wearing, sending our children to school to sit for 7, 8, or even 9 hours per day (they have to wear them on the bus as well) with a mask on.
What rational person could possibly think that this is a good idea?
No, I am not some crazy "anti-masker" on a rant.
Consider that the New England Journal of Medicine published a paper on April 1, 2020, in which the authors stated:
"We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection."
They went on to say:
"In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic."
In their closing paragraph, they wrapped up by calling masks "talismans" that may help increase perceived sense of safety and well-being.
I don't know about you, but I don't need a talisman to feel safe - I prefer to trust in my immune system.
But enough about masks for the moment.
Please observe a moment of silence for all the businesses that have died of COVID and all the businesses barely hanging on.
Please take some time to send good thoughts and prayers to all of our elderly citizens who have been held prisoner in assisted living facilities for over 6 months.
And don't forget the children of Vermont, whose childhoods and education have been altered indelibly by the fear and uncertainty caused by these baseless restrictions.
All of these consequences have come about as a result of a passive citizenry that has quietly acquiesced to all of it, because "It's just a mask."
Masks are the symbol of the tyranny of Phil Scott, his unlawful COVID restrictions, and the ultimate destruction of our families, communities, and state. Widespread compliance without conviction is the means by which this tyranny is allowed to thrive.
Ultimately, when every man, woman, and child in our beautiful state has been negatively and irreparably impacted by these unlawful curtailments of our most fundamental rights, we will rue the day we allowed this to happen.
We will rue the day when we said "It's just a mask."
If you believe we should all have the freedom to make our own decisions about our bodies and our health, please take a few moments to sign, then share the petition.
